Klonopin (Clonazepam)
Panic attack is a behavioral problem, which has two main solutions: psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. Psychotherapy is an expensive method of treatment of panic disorders, which is hardly affordable for all men and women suffering from frequent recurrences of panic attacks.
Therefore, most people use medications to deal with panic attacks, including one of the best anti-panic agents Klonopin (brand of Clonazepam tablets).
Klonopin and key aspects of anti-panic therapy
Klonopin has several advantages that make it one of the most prescribed drugs for treatment of panic disorders. These advantages lie in that:
- in single use of Klonopin, you manage to quickly alleviate the symptoms of panic attack.
- in regular use of Klonopin for a few weeks, you manage to prevent panic attacks and significantly reduce their intensity.
It is important the fact that after using Klonopin, panic attacks occur much less often than before the anti-panic therapy. However, one dose of Klonopin is not able to provide anti-panic effect lasting a few weeks or months.
Therefore, patients survived heavy traumatic event may requirea long-term use of Klonopin for effective prevention of severe panic attacks.
Klonopin has been used as anti-panic agent for several decades and has already proven itself as one of the best drugs for treatment and prevention of panic disorders (with or without agoraphobia).
Besides the fact that Klonopin exerts anti-panic effects, it provides clinically significant anticonvulsant activity and is approved for treatment of some types of seizure disorders.
The mechanism of Klonopin action differs from the mechanism of action of other anticonvulsants. Therefore, Klonopin can be used if alternative antiepileptic therapy is ineffective or can be prescribed to intensify the effect of other types of anticonvulsants (including succinimides).
The mechanism of Klonopin action is similar to the mechanism of action of other benzodiazepines. Therefore, patients who fail to control seizures with benzodiazepines, with a high probability will not able to control them by means of Klonopin tablets too.
To control seizures and prevent panic attacks, different doses of Klonopin are used. Patients with seizure disorders take higher doses than patients with panic disorder do.
Minimal and maximum permissible doses of Klonopin
The minimal effective dose of Klonopin prescribed in the first days of anticonvulsant therapy is 1.5mg per day, divided into three stages.
- To achieve and maintain anticonvulsant effect, up to 20 mg of Klonopin can be prescribed per day, divided into three stages.
To initiate anti-panic therapy, the minimal daily dose of Klonopin 0.5mg divided into two intakes should be used.
- To achieve the maximum anti-panic effect,high doses of Klonopin up to 4 mg per day used at once or in several intakes can be prescribed.
Possible side effects and prescribing restrictions
Like other benzodiazepines, Klonopin has sedative activity, so its most frequent side effect is drowsiness.
Less commonly, Klonopin pills cause:
- Salivation;
- Coordination disorder;
- Behavioral disorder.
Klonopin tablets are contraindicated for some groups of patients.
Benzodiazepine Klonopin should not be used to treat panic or convulsive disorders in men and women with:
- severe liver pathologies;
- untreated acute angle-closure glaucoma (AACG);
- allergy to benzodiazepines and benzodiazepine derivatives.
Features of Klonopin use in different conditions
One of the Klonopin disadvantages is that the power of its anticonvulsant effect can be reduced in regular use of this drug for several months.
When planning the treatment regimen, Klonopin is usually regarded as a drug for short-term medical therapy of seizure disorders. However, in some cases, adjustment of Klonopin daily doses allows to maintain a significant anticonvulsant effect for more than three months.
Klonopin tablets can be prescribed to treat panic attacks caused by any traumatic events. However, different risk factors may affect effectiveness of panic disorder treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the benefits of using Klonopin individually for each patient.
Klonopin can be used both for short-term and for long-term treatment of panic or seizure disorders. Long-term Klonopin therapy can be carried out only in the case if the level of anticonvulsant or anti-panic effects of Klonopin tablets is not decreased in their prolonged and regular use.
